Publication date: Fri, 17 Oct 2025

The International Science Council (ISC) has appointed a new Steering Group to guide the work of the ISC Social Science Matters Programme

The Programme will explore how the role and visibility of the social sciences and humanities can be enhanced in the current sustainability policy landscape at national and multilateral levels and how ISC Members and partners can collaborate, exchange ideas, lessons and capacities more effectively in this area.

The Steering Group will provide strategic advice on the overall direction, scope, and priorities of the project, support the promotion and dissemination of project findings and recommendations, advise on stakeholder engagement and fundraising and identify gaps in participation, substantive themes and outputs.

The Steering Group will play a central role in advancing the Programme’s objectives, including:

  • Understanding the challenges and good practices in developing social science contributions to sustainable development policy and demonstrate the value of social science contributions to policy making and implementation;
  • Developing evidence-based policy recommendations for sustainability;
  • Building capacity for social science research and collaboration for social transformations for sustainable development;
  • Providing a platform for collaboration and for responding to common issues.

The Steering Group is co-chaired by Karina Batthyány, Full Professor and researcher at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of the Republic (Uruguay), and Craig Calhoun, University Professor of Social Sciences at Arizona State University and Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics.
