  • One full-time position, salary commensurate with qualifications and experience (public sector pay scale E13 or E14, 52-79,000 euros per year) with additional employer’s benefits. We aim to offer a contract running for three to six years, depending on the provisions of the German Act on Fixed-Term Employment Contracts in Academia and on the relevant underlying conditions;
  • Your own budget for conferences, student assistants etc., currently 6,000 euros per year;
  • A research institute with excellent researchers, many opportunities for exchange with them, extensive support from the institute’s infrastructure. This includes the institutes IT unit, its PR and library as well as its data and method unit. The latter consults MZES projects in four areas: 1. Surveys (survey design, survey methodology including experiments and survey data analysis); 2. Secondary data (micro, macro and geodata, including data management plans); 3. Data analysis (including causal inference and data visualisation); 4. Computational Social Science (including text analysis, network analysis, machine learning).

What we are looking for:

  • You hold a relevant PhD in the social sciences and have published in this context in renowned international journals;
  • Relevant project experience and research on European societies in international context, broadly conceived, would be an advantage.

Your tasks:

  • You will develop your own research projects in the research areas of department A and you obtain grant funding, e.g. from the German Research Foundation (DFG).
  • You will publish your research results in international peer-reviewed journals.
  •  You will teach one seminar every semester (2 hours per week) at the University’s School of Social Sciences.

If the personal requirements are met, the position will be filled in accordance with the German Act on Fixed-Term Employment Contracts in Academia (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG), ideally starting on 1 April 2024.

The position is generally suitable for job sharing. The employment relationship is subject to the provisions of the collective agreement for public service employees of the German Länder (TV-L).

The MZES and the University of Mannheim aim to increase the number of women in academia and therefore explicitly encourage qualified women to apply. Applicants with disabilities are treated with preference given comparable qualification.

We look forward to receiving your application including a cover letter, CV, copies of academic degrees/certificates/diplomas (incl. doctoral certificate and/or doctoral thesis examiner report), a list of publications, and a 1-page concept for a research project for which you plan to obtain grant funding preferably in digital form in a single pdf file.
