This presentation offers a comprehensive historical overview from the 1940s to the present, focusing on key terms and key moments in the framing of sexual violence. It examines how these framings whether as a “crime against humanity,” “genocidal rape,” or “attack on honor,” among others, reflect the socio-cultural and political power dynamics that influence the interpretation, framing of sexual violence and survivors within international law. It will also examine the Indian domestic legal framework and how the Indian state deals with and frames sexual violence in conflicts.
