Background

Recognised as study group in 1988; granted research committee status in 1992; changed name from "Women and Politics in Developing Nations" to "Women and Politics in the Global South" in December 2015.

Objectives

Focus on the process of development, issues of gender-inequality, political regimes, the inter-play of micro-political processes, representation, decision making, the allocation of resources, democratisation and the removal of iniquitous relationships at all levels.

The committee has, to date, paid particular attention to the issues of women, debt and structural adjustment, women and the environment, women in the democratisation process and debt and structural adjustment: impact on women; ethnic conflict and women’s human rights. The committee is currently undertaking a special study on women’s leadership in economic institutions.
