The University of Glasgow will host the 9th Annual Environmental Politics and Governance (EPG) Conference on 11-13 July 2023, building on the success of previous conferences in Seattle, Zurich, Bloomington, Stockholm, Santa Barbara, Oslo, and State College. We request proposals for papers that address important or innovative theoretical ideas with rigorous quantitative or qualitative research designs in all areas of research on the economic, policy, and political aspects of climate change, energy, and the environment. The main goals of the conference are to showcase the best research on
environmental politics and governance from across relevant disciplines and to provide a venue for scholars to strengthen their networks and shape future research directions. The University of Glasgow, founded in 1541, will provide (shared) accommodation for participants without access to own travel funds and will cover local food expenses for all attendees.

Format

The conference will consist of research presentations and discussion in plenary sessions and a poster session. The conference will feature 36-40 papers in plenary format and 8-10 papers in the poster session. All submissions, including those by EPG steering group members, will undergo double-blind review. The conference chair will rely on these reviews when deciding on
the final programme.

Submission Process

Paper proposals should provide the following information:

1) Information about author names and contact information;
2) an anonymous PDF file with a paper title and a detailed abstract of no more than 1,000 words that outlines the research question, theory, data, and methods, along with the contributions to the field of environmental politics and governance. The abstract may include one table or figure, as appropriate.

We will consider works-in-progress only, so please do not submit published, forthcoming, or accepted work. Authors of an accepted proposal are expected to share the paper with conference participants two weeks before the conference.

Proposals should be submitted online by clicking this link here. All fields contain required information, and the paper proposal needs to be submitted as a single-file PDF without any identifying information.

Logistics

There is no conference registration fee. The University of Glasgow will provide (shared) accommodation for participants without access to their own travel funds for three nights from 11-14 July 2023. The University of Glasgow will cover lodging expenses for one presenting author per accepted paper. To support the participation of scholars without access to their own travel funds, participants who can cover their accommodation expenses from their own research/travel funds are encouraged to do so. This helps to make participation as inclusive as possible. Food will be provided free of charge for everyone. Participants are responsible for covering their own travel costs to Glasgow.

The University of Glasgow is situated in Glasgow’s West End, overlooking Kelvingrove Park. Glasgow and Edinburgh International Airports are well-connected to central European hubs in Amsterdam (KLM), Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Paris (Air France), and London (British Airport). Both airports have 24/7 train (Scotrail from Edinburgh) and bus (CityLink and Megabus from Edinburgh, FirstBus from Glasgow) connections to Glasgow city centre, from where the University is connected by subway, bus, or taxi. The cab fare from Glasgow airport to the hotel is £25-30.

Participants should plan to arrive on Tuesday by late afternoon (11 July 2023) for the welcome reception at Glasgow City Chambers at 6pm that night and depart on Friday morning (14 July 2023). The expectation is that participants will attend the full conference and contribute to discussions and community building.
