Organized by: The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)

With more than 80 courses to choose from, the ICPSR Summer Program offers a variety of training opportunities at all skill levels for researchers interested in learning quantitative methods and statistical analysis.

Our curriculum is broadly divided into two categories, based on course length:

Four-week Sessions

Each year, the ICPSR Summer Program offers two four-week sessions. The dates of our 2020 sessions are:

  • First Session: Monday, June 22 - Friday, July 17, 2020
  • Second Session: Monday, July 20 - Friday, August 14, 2020

All courses in our four-week sessions take place on the University of Michigan central campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Both of our four-week sessions feature a broad array of courses, which are categorized as either a "workshop" or a "lecture." Workshops comprise the core of learning and feature intensive instruction in specific quantitative methods and statistical techniques; four-week workshops include "Bayesian Modeling for the Social Sciences," "Race, Ethnicity, and Quantitative Methodology," and "Game Theory," among others. Lectures provide supplementary material to the workshops; examples include "Introduction to Computing" and "Mathematics for Social Scientists."

Additionally, both of our four-week sessions include the Blalock Lecture Series, which features nightly talks, presentations, and panel discussions by respected scholars on topics related to professional development and socialization, as well as measurement issues and research on race, ethnicity, and gender. For an idea of past talks, please refer to our 2019 Blalock Lecture schedule or watch recorded presentations on our YouTube page.

Participants in a four-week session may take as many courses (workshops, lectures, and Blalocks) as desired during the session for which they are enrolled.

Three- to Five-day Workshops

The ICPSR Summer Program also offers short workshops for those who need to learn a specific technique or method in a few days. A three- to five-day workshop typically meets from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Our short workshops take place in Ann Arbor, MI, as well as other cities across the US.

Registration for a 3- to 5-day workshop is on a per-course basis, meaning participants registered for a single three- to five-day statistical workshop may not attend another three- to five-day workshop, unless they register for that other workshop.
