Call for Award Description

Aim
The aim is to encourage research in those areas in which Pasqual Maragall focussed his thought and political action – in a historical or current approach. The award of the grant is governed by the regulations below.

Seventh call for a grant of €5,000 from the Pasqual Maragall Legacy Research Programme.

Deadline for applications: 31 October 2020.

Criteria
Pasqual Maragall Legacy Research - Fundació Cataluña Europa

Eligibility and requirements:

  • Applications are invited from individuals or groups with experience in social science research. If the applicant has obtained a doctorate, then it must have been awarded between 2010 & 2020;
  • For research proposals made by a group, the individual leading the project must have obtained a doctorate during the same period (2010-2020);
  • The research proposal must be aimed at one the main historical or current areas in which Pasqual Maragall focussed his thoughts and political actions – for example:

1) Cities:

  • The city of Barcelona;
  • Metropolitan cities;
  • The international role of cities.

2) Democracy and federalism:

  • Federal state reform / federal reform of Europe;
  • Multi-level governance and subsidiarity;
  • Culture, thought, and deepening democracy.

3) Europe and the Mediterranean:

  • The future of Europe;
  • The Mediterranean area;
  • The Euroregion.

4) Political action:

  • Socialism and social democracy;
  • Social policies;
  • The Euroregion

-We invite diverse and original hypotheses, interpretations, and conclusions that add new value to these areas of research;

-Research projects must be unpublished and not have received funds from another organisation or public administration;

-The research must be completed within one year of the date on which the grant is made;

-The Fundació Cataluña Europa reserves the right to publish the results of the research;

-If the author or authors decide to publish part of the material, it must be stated that the author has benefited from this award.

Applications:
Applications must be signed by the applicant and include the following:

  • Copy of a national identity document or passport of the candidate signing the application, or the principal investigator of the group;
  • Academic curriculum of the applicant, or in the case of a group, all members of the group;
  • Certification of doctorate, or accreditation of the research experience of the candidate or group.

Applications with the required documents must be submitted electronically to the Fundación Catalunya Europa (info@catalunyaeuropa.net) and marked ‘Pasqual Maragall Legacy Research Grant Call’.
The deadline for applications is 31 October 2020.

Duration:
The research must be completed within one year of the date on which the grant is made. The Fundació Catalunya Europa reserves the right to withdraw the grant if a follow-up report is unsatisfactory.

Amount:
Pasqual Maragall Legacy Research Grants are for a total of €5,000 and this will be presented in two payments of €2,500. In addition to the grant, the Fundació Catalunya Europa will help publish the results of the research.

Award procedure:
A jury will decide which project is awarded the grant. The jury will consist of two members of the Fundació Catalunya Europa Board of Trustees or Advisory Council, and the Director of the Fundació (who
will act as secretary).

The jury may also include representatives of organisations that work with the Fundació Catalunya Europa.
The decision of the jury will be announced within three months of the deadline for applications.
The jury may question the applicants to confirm their suitability to complete the work proposed and/or modify the project to make it more feasible. Before publication of the research, the Advisory Council
may wish to suggest and discuss minor changes or extensions.

The jury will consider the following aspects when considering the proposed projects:

  • Links with the thought and political activity of Pasqual Maragall
  • Originality
  • Coherence and feasibility of the proposal
  • Experience of the candidate or group
  • Written support from an associate professor or professor at a Catalan university who can advise, where appropriate, the researchers during the project.

The jury may decide not to award the grant if none of the applications are assessed to be of sufficient quality.
