IPSA Seeks Co-editors for its New Journal on Global Governance
Publication date: Mon, 14 Jul 2025
In 2027, the International Political Science Association (IPSA) will launch a new journal, Governance Review. Previously published by the University of Ottawa and Érudit, the Governance Review is a multidisciplinary journal covering all aspects of governance. Following its 21-year tradition, the journal aims at becoming a premier outlet for texts of all epistemological and ontological sensitivities, with the dual perspective of enriching positive and normative knowledge about governance, as well as nurturing public debates on the challenges and issues related to its contemporary exercise.
IPSA will publish Governance Review starting on 1 January 2027, in cooperation with Sage. Ideally, the new editors should serve a six-year term from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2031, with the first year dedicated to overseeing the transition from Érudit to Sage and to soliciting high-quality manuscripts for its launch in January 2027. We have ambitious plans for the journal: Not only do we aim to increase the number of issues from two to four between 2027 and 2031, but we also aim to have Governance Review listed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) by the end of 2031. The intention is to select the new co-editors by November 2025.
We are seeking motivated political scientists who want to bring Governance Review to the next level and who aim to shape this new IPSA publication for the years and decades to come. Ideally, we are looking for two scholars in the field of governance studies largely defined, who are ready for this exciting challenge. We expect a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, as we aim to build a truly international journal with authorship from all over the world, including underrepresented regions such as Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Applicants will be assessed by a Search Committee, chaired by Prof. Daniel Stockemer, Co-Editor of IPSR, based on their experience and a statement describing how they plan to shape Governance Review in the years to come. We strongly encourage the application of editorial teams consisting of two co-editors.
Responsibilities of the co-editor include the following:
- Actively acquiring manuscripts;
- Overseeing the peer-review process using the ScholarOne Manuscripts online management system;
- Selecting appropriate peer reviewers to evaluate submissions;
- Making decisions regarding publication of submitted manuscripts;
- Editing manuscripts to ensure that they are presented in clear and fluent English;
- Working collaboratively with the other co-editor and key personnel at Sage, in particular the Production Editor, Marketing Manager and Managing Editor;
- Developing strategies to strengthen the journal’s position in political science.
Candidates for the position should have:
- A record as a distinguished political scientist in her/his field;
- A demonstrated commitment to international political science research;
- Previous editorial experience with at least one other peer-reviewed and indexed journal;
- Fluency in written English;
- Familiarity with the work of IPSA and its Research Committees.
The successful candidate will be expected to become an individual member of IPSA; help prepare an annual report that is presented in person to the Executive Committee of IPSA; contribute to IPSA’s Publications Committee; and participate as a non-voting member in IPSA’s Executive Committee (which meets twice annually). The co-editors will be provided with an honorarium and adequate resources to meet expenses associated with these commitments.
Enquiries about the call can be made to the head of the Search Committee, Prof. Daniel Stockemer, at daniel.stockemer@uottawa.ca. Applicants are invited to submit an application to Prof. Stockemer, including a CV and an accompanying statement describing their goals for Governance Review, by 3 October 2025.
Applications will only be accepted by email. If you do not receive an acknowledgment of your application materials within two days, please follow up with Prof. Stockemer.
