The Faculty of Social Sciences of the KU Leuven, invites scholars to apply for a full-time research professorship in the research unit LINES (Leuven International and European Studies). This position is funded by the Special Research Fund (BOFZAP), established by the Flemish Government.
We are looking for motivated and internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research record and with educational competence in the field of international politics and with a focus on European political and governmental developments in the international context.
The appointment is expected to start on 1 October 2021. Applications will be evaluated in parallel and independently by (1) the KU Leuven Research Council in a competitive process across academic domains and (2) the faculty advisory committee. During the first 10 years, the teaching obligations as a research professor will be limited to 12 to 14 ECTS. Afterwards, the position will be modified into a regular professorship.
This Faculty of Social Sciences seeks to employ a research professor who works in the domain of European and international politics, who will be part of the research unit LINES (Leuven International and European Studies), and on that basis helps to develop the political science programme at the KU Leuven Campus Kulak in Kortrijk. This position will create opportunities for cooperation with other campuses in the wider region around Kortrijk, in particular with the College of Europe (Bruges) and universities in Rijsel/Lille (Sciences Po and Université Catholique de Lille).
The successful candidate needs to have built up a strong empirical, theoretical and empirical base of knowledge in the field of political science research, with a particular focus on international relations and a (critically and historically informed) expertise on the European Union. Within this field, the candidate's research is focused on European political and governance developments in the international context, the response of European institutions to the various forms of crisis the EU (and Europe) are currently facing and the governance of these institutions.
Particular attention should go to the political history of the European integration process and the various ways in which this process has been challenged (e.g. through populism, the politics of disintegration, technological advancement, the politicization and contestation of international and European norms and principles).
