Job Description

Tim Büthe, Professor of Political Science & Public Policy and Chair for International Relations at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position in his research team at the Hochschule für Politik in Munich, Germany, beginning as early as 1 April 2021.

The Hochschule für Politik (HfP) is an interdisciplinary institute for the study of politics and public policy, associated with the TUM, one of Germany’s top research universities.  The Chair for International Relations is a research and teaching unit of the HfP, focused on inter-/transnational economic relations. It brings together researchers pursuing active research agendas to make both theoretically exciting and empirically important contributions.  We welcome research proposals on any IPE topic, but are particularly interested in:

  • Regulatory politics and policy, especially technology governance;
  • Governance of global markets, including antitrust/competition law, economics and policy;
  • Health policy and technological change in health/medicine;
  • Topics that integrate international and comparative political economy.

Analytical skills and the capacity for independent social scientific research will be key selection criteria.  Successful applicants will be expected, above all, to develop and pursue their own research within the overarching research agenda of the IR Chair.  Postdocs at the IR Chair also participate in ongoing collaborative research projects and make independent contributions to teaching.

Our Offer

  • a postdoctoral research and teaching position in a vibrant research team for 2-3 years initially (extension possible);
  • remuneration in accordance with the German public service pay scale (collective agreement for state-level public servants, TV-L) at the E-13 level (100%);
  • the opportunity to develop your professional research and leadership skills in a high-impact field with excellent career opportunities.

Your Responsibilities

  • Conduct cutting-edge research and publish it in top journals (on your own and jointly);
  • Teach IR, IPE or related courses at the Bachelor's and/or Master's level, usually 2 courses/semester (5 SWS);
  • Actively participate in the intellectual life and research activities of the IR Chair.

Your Qualifications

  • PhD/doctorate in political science or a related social science discipline or interdisciplinary field;
  • strong methodological skills (including in quantitative methods);
  • ability to teach classes in political economy, international relations, or on related topics;
  • enthusiasm for working in a team;
  • strong ability to communicate in spoken and written English (required; applicants who do not have a degree from an English-language university or program, please indicate proficiency);
  • ability to communicate in German valuable, but not required (please indicate proficiency).

How to Apply

Please send the following materials electronically (and in a single pdf file) to ir-chair@hfp.tum.de:

  • a cover letter, which gives a sense of your scholarly and career interests, as well as your preferred starting date;
  • a current CV (curriculum vitae, including any publications);
  • a research proposal (in English, typically 2-4 pages in length) for a research agenda you hope to carry out in the context of this postdoctoral position;
  • transcripts providing specific information about all of your university-level coursework and/or a list of courses that is informative about your substantive and methodological preparation, including the level at which each course was taken and the grade obtained;
  •  if not readily apparent from the official transcripts, documentation of all degrees obtained; if you have not yet completed your doctoral degree, please indicate date of completion and award;
  •  a research paper or other analytical writing sample, preferably published and in English (for co-authored articles, please indicate your contribution); and
  •  a list of at least 3 academic references who can speak to your qualification for postdoctoral research.  Reference letters are not required for the initial consideration of an application, but we will ask for at least 2 letters should you be shortlisted.

All applications received by 1 December 2020 are assured full consideration.  For questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Tim Büthe at buthe@hfp.tum.de

The IR Chair strongly supports the TUM's strategic goal of increasing the diversity of its staff.  As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, we particularly encourage applications from women, people with disabilities, members of groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the academy, and others who would increase the diversity of the university's research and teaching staff.

As part of your application, you will provide personal data to the Technical University of Munich (TUM).  Please take note of the TUM policy on collecting and processing personal data in the course of the application process pursuant to Art. 13 of the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union (GDPR) at https://portal.mytum.de/kompass/datenschutz/Bewerbung/

By submitting your application, you confirm to have read and understood the data protection policy.
