Job Description

The Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM), based at the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP), is actively seeking candidates who wish to make advanced research on themes related to our research agenda.

The selected candidates will receive a monthly fellowship in the amount of R$ 7.373,10 and a grant, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.

The Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) is a Research, Innovation and Diffusion (RIDC) with support from FAPESP. It is an institution for advanced research in social science that investigates social inequalities and the formulation of public policies. It consists of a multidisciplinary group, which includes, political scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, engineers, economists, geographers and demographers, whose research agenda is focused on citizens’ access to well-being. The CEM researchers work in several fields of knowledge and apply distinct methodologies in their investigations.

Our research agenda is focused on the study of citizens' access to well-being and about processes of social inequality reproduction, especially in urban contexts. CEM is specially interested in developing investigations of mechanisms that may lead to inequalities and poverty reduction, particularly through public policies.

Postdoctoral Fellows (PD) shall conduct theoretical and/or empirical research, in addition to other regular activities, such as participation in seminars, paper writing and the dissemination of research results. Post doc researchers will be required to submit at least one article in a high-impact academic journal and give a seminar as a result of his/her one-year fellowship. The supervision of Scientific Initiation fellowships and the organization of scientific meetings are also advisable, in order to contribute to the consolidation of their research topics within the Center.

The postdoctoral fellows are expected to develop projects in one of the following themes:

  • Research line 1: The role of subnational regulation in mediating the implementation of national policies;
  • Research line 2. The role of education policy in inequality reduction;
  • Research Line 3. Inequality and Political Behavior;
  • Research Line 4. Who governs what in urban inequalities?

FELLOWSHIPS
The opportunity is open to Brazilian and foreign candidates. It is desirable to have a PhD in Social Sciences or related fields with a strong history of publishing and good performance in spoken and written English.

It is required for the for the fellow to live in São Paulo and work at CEM headquarter, obviously subject to possible restrictions due to the present social isolation conditions during the Covid 19 pandemic.

The selected candidate will receive a monthly fellowship in the amount of R$ 7373,10 and a grant, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity. The fellow must not receive other grant.

The projects shall begin in March 2021, unless the conditions of the Covid 19 pandemic still impede face-to-face work. In this case, the start dates will be renegotiated considering the existing conditions.

A maximum of three (3) Post-doctoral fellowships will be selected.

DOCUMENTATION FOR APLLICATION

2. MyResearcherID e/ou MyCitation (Google Scholar);
3. List of publications;
4. Research project (comprising (i) abstract, (ii) research questions; (iii) methodology; (iv) working plan in no more than 20 pages. The project should not display the identification of the candidate at any point, since the project evaluation will be blind;
5. A copy of two publications. Books, articles in refereed journals and book chapters are included into this category;
6. Letter of intention explaining the reasons for choosing CEM and specifying the contribution of the research project to the Center.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection of candidates will be conducted in two stages. In the first, the curriculum, publications, and the academic trajectory of the candidate will be examined as well as the scientific quality of the proposal along with its adherence to the research lines of the CEM. The second phase will be an interview with the selection committee, when the academic merits of the proposals and candidate performance will be considered. Interviews can be made via videoconference.

Candidates selected for the second phase will be contacted via email by the September 30th.

Interviews will be conducted in person or via video-conference in at most 15 days after the publication of the results of the first phase.

SELECTION ANNOUNCEMENT
The candidates selected will be posted on the CEM website by October 30th, 2020.
