Job Description

The Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship invites recent college and graduate school alumni to apply for six to nine month fellowships in Washington, DC focusing on arms control, peace, and international security issues. Founded in 1987 to develop and train the next generation of leaders on a range of peace and security issues, the program has awarded 198 fellowships to date.

Scoville Fellows work with one of more than two dozen participating public-interest organizations. Fellows may undertake a variety of activities that support their host organization, including research, writing, public education, and advocacy on a range of security issues. These issues include nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, non-proliferation, weapons trade, environmental security, diplomacy, conflict resolution and peacebuilding, and emerging technology threats. Fellows are supervised by senior level staff and often have the opportunity to publish articles, blogs, factsheets, or reports. Additionally, fellows may attend coalition meetings, policy briefings, and congressional hearings, as well as meetings with policy experts arranged by the fellowship. Many former Scoville Fellows have gone on to pursue graduate degrees in international relations and taken prominent positions in the field of peace and security with public-interest organizations, the federal government, academia, and media.

Candidates must have anexcellent academic record anda strong interest inissues ofpeace andsecurity. The program isopen toall U.S. citizens, and non-U.S. citizens living inthe U.S. eligible for employment. Benefits include a $3,400 monthly salary, basic health insurance compensation, alumni and board mentoring, travel to DC to begin the fellowship, and a modest stipend for professional
development.

Application Deadlines:
Fall 2021 Fellowship: January 19, 2021 (begin between 15 July and 1 October 2021)
Spring 2022 Fellowship: October 1, 2021 (begin between 15 January and 1 April 2022)
