Sponsored by the British Academy and in association with Edge Hill University (UK), The University of Sheffield (UK) and the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, the aim of the Writing Workshop is to up-skill Ukrainian scholars researching the related fields of democratisation, civic development, civil society and third sector organisations/NGOs. This selective programme will provide you with a taught training programme, editors’ plenary, one-on-one mentoring, and the possibility to submit to a special issue in Voluntary Sector Review.

To be able to apply for the Workshop you will need to be resident in the Ukraine (i.e. Ukrainian nationals or foreign nationals living in Ukraine), hold a PhD or be near completion, and actively research the workshops topics in the Ukrainian context (Comparative studies are accepted if they include the Ukraine).

For your application you will need to submit a draft of a journal paper (no more than 6000 words, in English) and a short 1-page CV (in English).

Submissions are due by 31st July 2021 at 17.00 BST and should be send to isr@edgehill.ac.uk

Submission will be assessed based on fit to the above outline topic areas, strength of theoretical contribution, and methodological rigour.

Successful applicants will:

  • Attend one, two-day workshop delivered in English in Kyiv or L’viv (state your preference in your application but final spots will be as assigned by the organising team) in September 2021, Final Dates TBC;
  • Have their expenses for the Workshop (travel, accommodation, food) covered;
  • Attend a virtual editors’ plenary following the workshop featuring Editor’s-in-Chief and editorial board members from top international journals, including Voluntary Sector Review, Voluntas, Journal of Civil Society and Europe-Asia Studies;
  • Have a mentor assigned to facilitate/co-author an academic output in an internationally recognised, English language journal.
