Statistics, Politics and Policy

In recent years, the topic of inequality has received particularly strong attention in the academic world. But not least since Piketty's book ‘Capital in the 21st Century’, the subject has also reached a broader audience and has become widely discussed in the media and public sphere. Latest research indicates that inequality is growing during the Coronavirus pandemic with unprecedented speed and
continues to fuel many political phenomena related to political polarization and extremism.

Inequality and its consequences are too persistent, intertwined, and widespread to be examined exclusively from an economic perspective, as it can impact almost all policy areas and societal fields. In addition, different academic disciplines deal with inequalities from various perspectives and with different methodological toolkits. The following call aims to publish scientific contributions on the broad topic of inequality in our SPP issue 3/21.

We envisage that the following topics can be addressed in submitted manuscripts:
1. The measurement of inequality
2. The empirical development of inequality on a global scale or in international comparison
3. Longitudinal comparisons in individual countries
3. Welfare states and equality
4. Gender inequality
5. Health and inequality (e.g. in the wake of Michael Marmots analysis)
6. The impact of inequality on migration
7. Inequality and education
8. Racial and Ethnic inequalities
9. Political and participatory inequalities
10. The consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic for inequality.

These are just a few examples of a multitude of different topics and questions that might arise in the course of this subject and which are suitable for the call. We encourage the submission of research
notes (5000 words max.) for this special issue

Manuscripts should be submitted until 1 August 2021.
