Climatic Change

Changes in temperature and weather patterns are increasing the frequency, intensity, and variability of climate-related hazards, including droughts, flooding, cyclones, heatwaves, and wildfires. An emerging body of evidence suggests that climate-related stressors such as severe weather events, displacement, livelihood insecurity, and food insecurity may increase the risk of gender-based violence (GBV), particularly violence against women and girls. However, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding the mechanisms through which climate variability influences different forms of GBV, the populations most at risk, and the structural factors that may mitigate or exacerbate these impacts.

This topical collection seeks multidisciplinary contributions that explore the relationships between climate variability, including both slow-onset changes and extreme weather events, and GBV. We welcome both quantitative and qualitative research and encourage submissions examining:

• The impacts of climate variability and extreme weather events on different forms of GBV;
• Variations in risk across pre-, during-, and post-disaster periods;
• The experiences of internally displaced persons, Indigenous communities, and sexual and gender minorities;
• The role of governance, social protection systems, and resource access in shaping violence risks;
• Methodological and ethical challenges in measuring GBV in crisis-affected and climate-impacted settings.

While the collection places particular emphasis on research from the Indo-Pacific and Asia-Pacific regions, submissions addressing other geographical contexts are also welcome.
