Democracy Under Pressure – Challenges and Possibilities
Democratic systems of governance are under serious pressure. Several countries have experienced authoritarian backsliding. Many others have seen a rise in popularity of anti-democratic movements and politicians. In addition, technological developments (the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence systems, in particular), the climate crisis and humanitarian disasters, violence, and socio-political polarization raise serious questions about the prospects of democratic governance. Political scientists have their work cut out for them.

Yet these challenges also create an urgent opportunity to rethink democratic institutions, practices, and ideals. Political science research thus has a vital role to play in generating new ideas, advancing rigorous evidence, and illuminating pathways toward more resilient, inclusive, and democratic futures.

The Programme Committee of the 2027 CPSA Annual Conference invites scholars to present ongoing research not only on the formidable challenges democracy seems to face but also on the possibilities for democratic renewal in response to those challenges. We also invite submissions in all other areas of political science, spanning one or more of our 16 disciplinary sections and competitions (3MT and Posters). CPSA has always embraced a global outlook, and we encourage researchers from all countries and backgrounds to take part by submitting their work.
As always, we welcome submissions both for individual papers and pre-organized sessions (i.e., panels, roundtables and Author Meets Critics).
