Yuko Kasuya

Yuko Kasuya is a Japanese political scientist whose primary research field is comparative politics, with a particular focus on regime transition, political institutions, Southeast Asia, especially the Philippines, as well as East Asia, particularly Japan. She is Professor in the Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Law of Keio University, Tokyo, Japan.
Prof. Kasuya is currently engaged in research examining democratic backsliding, polarization, and disinformation. She has published two single-authored books, nine edited volumes, and numerous articles both in English and Japanese. She holds a Ph.D. in International Affairs from the University of California, San Diego, an M.A. in Development Studies from the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands, and a B.A. in Law from Keio University.
Prof. Kasuya’s recent books include Decolonization and Regime Change in Asia: Historical Origins of Democracy and Dictatorship (2025); Routledge Handbook of Autocratization in Southeast Asia (co-edited with Netina Tan, 2025); The Struggles between Democracy and Authoritarianism in Asia (co-edited with Ryosei Kokubun, in Japanese); Presidents, Assemblies, and Policy Making in Asia (2013); Politics of Change in the Philippines (co-edited with Nathan Gilbert Quimpo, 2010); and Presidential Bandwagon: Parties and Party Systems in the Philippines (2008). She has also published articles in Electoral Studies, Legislative Studies Quarterly, The Pacific Affairs, and Party Politics, among others.
She was President of the Japan Association of Comparative Politics from 2022 to 2024 and has been serving as Director of the V-Dem East Asia Regional Center since 2019.
Prof. Kasuya served on the IPSA Executive Committee for two consecutive terms from 2016 to 2021 and was IPSA Vice-President from 2018 to 2021. She is currently serving as IPSA President (2025–2027) and will hold the position of Past President on the Executive Committee from 2027 to 2029.
