The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and particularly Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), is reshaping digital education and redefining higher education. What began with online platforms and MOOCs has evolved into increasingly adaptive, modular, and personalized systems capable of tailoring content, assessment, and interaction to individual learners and supporting more flexible learning pathways. These technologies not only enhance pedagogical design but also enable education to scale globally, expanding access while transforming how knowledge is produced, delivered, and evaluated.
GenAI is accelerating this shift by enabling automated tutoring, content generation, and real-time feedback, thereby redefining the relationship between students, teachers, and institutions. As universities and private providers integrate AI-driven systems into their strategies, professional roles, skills, and organizational models are being reconfigured. Modular learning pathways and emerging forms of certification offer new flexibility to learners, while challenging traditional models of educational provision and requiring new organizational and strategic approaches. This transformation raises critical questions about pedagogical integrity, data use, algorithmic bias, and the governance of educational platforms.
At the same time, the global diffusion of AI-driven education is generating diverse models of learning and institutional change, calling for a comparative and critical examination of their policy implications and long-term sustainability.
