Technological Governance and Building Solidarities: Protecting Women's Agency in the time of Artificial Intelligence

Usage of the acclaimed revolutionary technology of Artificial Intelligence (AI) potentially affects gender equality. From hiring and recruitment to biased women's portrayal in AI, the patriarchal stereotypes spiral the new technology. This gets aggravated due to women's meagre representation in policy formulation and leadership roles in tech-based industries. While concerns are reflected in the growing scholarship by researchers in law, social sciences and humanities, scholarly work on AI's effect on women in Global South countries has not received much attention in the discourse on AI and women. Some of the questions we aim to discuss are: What can be done to initiate transnational solidarities? How can we build community in times of polarization? To address these questions, the present panel is an initiative to open-up conversation around the issue. We identify central concerns by drawing upon key theories and scholarly literature through a discussion surrounding questions of representation, bias and inequality, and AI's impact on women's work, body and agency. We are open to papers addressing this issue from macro, micro perspectives and using varied methodological tools and case study, as well.
