The Global South in the Emerging World Order: Perspectives from the Americas

In January 2026 at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, declared that a new world order was emerging, one where middle power developed countries will band together on matters of trade, investments, and security. Within the Global South, BRICS+ countries have a coalition to collaborate on development initiatives in partner countries. Within this grouping, China has a separate and extensive development program, the Belt and Road Initiative, which is working to create deeper economic relationships within the Global South. At the same time, Latin America and the Caribbean are faced with the destabilising politics of the “Donroe Doctrine” and the corresponding “Shield of the Americas” operations. The region is experiencing a renewed weaponization of poverty and migration resulting in a renewed securitization/militarization of the region, in service to the US, not the individual countries or the region. This panel invites papers addressing the political economy of the Global South in the emerging world order from the perspective of Global South countries in the Americas. We welcome both conceptual/theoretical reviews and empirical research-based papers.
