GESIS – Leibniz-Institute for the Social Sciences is an internationally active research institute, funded by federal and state governments and member of the Leibniz Association.

Starting as soon as possible our Department Survey Data Curation, Team Survey Data Augmentation located in Cologne, is looking for a

Teamleader Survey Data Augmentation
(Salary group 14 TV-L, 100% working time, limited for four years)

The department Survey Data Curation processes and prepares social science research data across a diverse range of data types to support sociological and political science research, especially in comparative perspectives across space and time. The curated data include long-running national (e.g., ALLBUS, GLES) and international (e.g., ISSP, CSES) survey programs, which are documented and curated to the highest quality standards.

The team Survey Data Augmentation offers innovative harmonization and linking services. Examples are the bridging between existing data collections through harmonization of variables and the linking of survey data with context, geo- and digital trace data.

Research activities within the team focus on methods related questions on harmonization geospatial analyses and data linking, but also on questions from research on democracy, societal inequalities and the impact of digital and social media.

Your tasks will be:

  • Lead an interdisciplinary team of post-doctoral and doctoral researchers, and support staff with the objective to develop and offer harmonization and data linking products to the wider social science community;
  • Advance the service portfolio of the team and collaboration with other GESIS departments for the development of innovative services for harmonization and linking of different datatypes;
  • Conception and establishing of the Competence Center on Linking and Dissemination for MEDem (Monitoring Electoral Democracy), a European research infrastructure for research on liberal democracy;
  • Conduct internationally visible research and acquisition of third-party funds on contemporary societal issues (preferably on democracy research) and develop a research agenda for the team;
  • Active engagement in national and international scientific communities, networking and participation in relevant events and conferences.

Your profile:

  • Completed PhD in a subject within the social sciences (eg. Political Science or Sociology), with preference on the quantitative democracy research;
  • Very good knowledge on the subjects of harmonisation of surveys, and/or linking of surveys with digital trace data (eg. Social media Data) or other context data (eg. official Statistic, Party Positions, Geodata);
  • Very good knowledge in the use of statistical software (preferably STATA) and/or social science compatible programming language (R or Python);
  • Experience in the leadership of international and/or interdisciplinary teams is of advantage;
  • High level of communication competence, very good English and German skills (spoken and written).
