International Conference - North Atlantic Security and Defense Strategy (NASDS 2022)

The Center for Research and Development of the Military University Institute – Portugal, in partnership with the Institute of International and European Law of the Reykjavík University – Iceland, and the Centre for Security Policy of the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies – Norway, announces the organization of an International Conference on North Atlantic Security and Defense Strategy (NASDS 2022), that will be held in Lisbon on 18-20 May 2022. The event is supported under the Fund for Bilateral Relations/EEA Financial Mechanism 2014 2021 (EEA Grants Portugal).

Scholars, researchers, experts and practitioners, especially from Atlantic and Arctic countries, EU and NATO member states, all are invited to submit their proposals, which are expected to contain a high level of novelty able to broaden the debate. The Organization strongly recommends a holistic, interdisciplinary approach, that includes theoretical frameworks and research methods from various sciences, e.g.: history, political science, military and security science, political philosophy, sociology, law or economy.

Participants are warmly invited to submit a paper proposal (max 300 words) drafted according to APA Style (7th Edition) format guidelines, along with a bio note (100-150 words), by 31 January 2022, on the following suggested topics (other topics will be considered):

1. Arctic: ‘nobody’s lake’?;
2. Polar routes and international law;
3. The Sino-Russian alliance for an Arctic silk road and the trans-Atlantic cooperation;
4. The economic impact of the Polar Silk Road on the European economy;
5. The militarization of the Arctic region;
6. A NATO Arctic Command in a trans-Atlantic perspective;
7. Security and legal challenges to the continental shelf claims beyond 200 nautical miles in North Atlantic Ocean and Central Arctic Ocean;
8. Technology in support of Search and Rescue activities in a large maritime area;
9. The role of Portugal in North Atlantic security;
10. Changing coastlines and the extent of national jurisdiction.

Proposals should be addressed to the organization committee and submitted through Easychair - NASDS 2022. Authors will be informed of the decision by 28 February 2022. Full papers selected for presentation (3-4,000 words) will be included in the conference proceedings published by the IUM with ISSN/ISBN and DOI. There are no costs associated with this call.
