RC51 International Political Economy

Session Code
RC51
Session Chairs
Mr. Laurence Whitehead
Dr. Vinicius Rodrigues Vieira

RC 51 wants to cast a new light on the analysis of power transitions, focusing on the political economy of domestic-international interactions with special emphasis on the impact of emerging market democracies (EMDs) like Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, and Turkey upon global economic governance. We therefore look for submissions that cover not only trade and finance — the two main traditional areas of International Political Economy (IPE) —, but also new topics related to democratic backsliding, populism, deglobalization, weaponized interdependence, climate change, migration, the politics of aid, and the role of cities and regions within sovereign states in foreign economic relations. With this, we aim to contribute to the World Congress' theme ("Politics in the Age of Transboundary Crises") without losing sight of the main debates in our subfield and research committee.
