The Chair of Empirical Political Science (Prof. Dr. Ulrich Sieberer) at the University of Bamberg advertises a fixed-term position starting April 1, 2023 as a

Part-time (50%) doctoral researcher and lecturer (m/f/d)

The position comprises 50% of a full position (currently 20 hours/week) is payed according to German public sector tariff scale TV-L E13. The position is initially limited until March 31, 2026. We aim to make an extension possible.

The chair conducts research in comparative politics with a focus on modern democracies, particularly in the areas of political institutions and political behavior (e.g. legislative and executive politics; party
politics, party competition and opposition; institutional design; political representation). The methodological focus is primarily on quantitative methods, methods of computational social science and expert interviews.

The chair offers a vibrant and internationally oriented research environment with a dynamic and cooperative team. The Bamberg Institute of Political Science is among the strongest political science
departments in Germany with regard to research. Teaching is strongly research oriented and profits from small groups and an intensive interaction with students. The Bamberg Graduate School of Social
Sciences (BAGSS) offers an internationally renowned doctoral program with courses, workshops and other means of support.

Description of tasks

  • Teaching 2.5 courses per year in the B.A. and M.A. programs in political science in the areas of comparative politics and applied quantitative methods. The ability to teach in German is a strong asset.
  • Conducting independent research in comparative politics, preferably in the research areas of the chair
  • We support a doctoral dissertation and offer didactical training
  • Collaboration in further tasks of the chair (e.g. acquiring third-party funding; joint research; some administrative tasks)

Requirements

  • Excellent university degree in Political Science or related field (Master degree oder equivalent) with an empirical-analytical focus, preferably in the field of comparative politics
  • Profound knowledge in at least one of the research field of the chair (see above)
  • Profound knowledge in quantitative research methods
  • Interest in and first experience with modern methods of causal inference and/or computational social science are assets
  • Very good knowledge of English and German, the ability to do independent scientific research, the ability to work in a team, and social skills are expected.
