The Arab Political Science Network (APSN) is pleased to announce a Call for Applications from PhD students and early-career academics for its annual Research Development Workshop to be held on June 5, 2020 in collaboration with the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship at the American University in Beirut. This year’s workshop will focus on Citizenship, Legal Status, and the State in the
MENA Region. We welcome research related to the workshop theme, including on topics such as:

  • The impact of citizenship policies on the rights of women and/or minorities
  • Statelessness and rights of non-citizens
  • Emigrant rights

The workshop is interested in proposals that tackle these topics from several different perspectives, including but not limited to everyday practices of citizenship, as well as formal legal rights. We also
welcome intersectional analyses that consider other categories, such as socio-economic status, class, gender, sexuality, race, and regional identities.

This one-day workshop seeks to foster a better understanding of how dynamics of inequality have shaped - and continue to shape - societies and politics in MENA. In addition, the workshop provides
an opportunity to receive feedback on ongoing article-length research and to develop scholarly networks with colleagues in the field.

APSN will cover the costs of participation (including travel and lodging) for up to 6 qualified applicants.

The workshop is open to scholars in Political Science and other social science disciplines who are undertaking research related to the workshop theme. Proposals (and final papers) can be in Arabic or
English. Most importantly, the work-in-progress must not be an excerpt from existing or completed work.
