Publication date: Tue, 20 Oct 2026

The International Political Science Association (IPSA) and the Latin American Political Science Association (ALACIP) are launching the ALACIP-IPSA Café Series, a joint initiative bringing together political scientists to discuss contemporary political challenges in Latin America. The series reflects the collaboration between the two associations and their Research Committees (RCs).

The first session, titled Human Rights, Inequalities, and Emerging Minorities, will be held online on 23 October 2026. Moderated by Flávia Biroli (University of Brasília, Brazil), the event will feature two speakers affiliated with IPSA’s Research Committee on Women and Politics in the Global South (RC07):

  • Mercedes Barros (CONICET and National University of Río Negro, Argentina), presenting on Human Rights, Democracy, Contemporary Activism, and Discursive Disputes in Latin America;
  • Priscila Coelho (FGV-SP, Brazil), presenting on Women in the Judiciary: Gender, Power, and the Gap Between Formal and Substantive Equality in Brazil.

The discussion will explore contemporary human rights debates, gender and representation in judicial institutions, democratic activism, Afro-descendant citizenship, and minority representation, highlighting the relationship between universal human rights frameworks and Latin America’s regional political realities. The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session.

The event will be held in Spanish and Portuguese, with no English translation provided. To watch the event live, subscribe to https://www.youtube.com/@alacip2216.
