Publication date: Tue, 23 Apr 2024

IPSA was represented at the ISA 2024 Annual Convention (3-6 April 2024, San Francisco) through a roundtable discussion honoring the groundbreaking work of Thomas Risse. The roundtable, titled New Perspectives on Transnational Non-State Actors – A Roundtable Honoring the Work of Thomas Risse, was held on 3 April and chaired by Hans Peter Schmitz (University of San Diego) and Anja Jetschke (University of Göttingen and IPSA Executive Committee member), who served as discussant and speaker.

Thomas Risse is a Senior Professor at the Free University of Berlin and has also been the recipient of IPSA’s Juan Linz Prize in 2021. Prof. Risse’s former PhD students and colleagues Tobias Berger (FU Berlin), Hans Peter Schmitz (University of San Diego), Anja Jetschke, and Beth Simmons (University of Pennsylvania) discussed new perspectives on transnational non-state actors. The discussion covered the following topics: The role of non-state actors in the translation of international norms (Tobias Berger), the role of non-knowledge for mobilization (Anja Jetschke), and the issue of normative bias in conceptualizing non-state actors (Hans Peter Schmitz). And finally, Beth Simmons placed these topics in the context of Thomas Risse’s broader work. The roundtable discussion concluded with a lively discussion with the audience.
