Job Description

The Chair of Empirical Political Science (Prof. Dr. Ulrich Sieberer) at the University of Bamberg advertises a fixed-term position starting 1 October 2022 as a

Full-time postdoctoral researcher and lecturer (m/f/d)

Depending on the applicant’s characteristics, the position can be filled as a public sector employee (German tariff scale TV-L E13) or as a temporary civil servant (pay group A13). The position is initially
limited to three years and can be extended for up to three more years.

The chair conducts research in comparative politics with a focus on modern democracies, particularly in the areas of political institutions and political behavior (e.g. legislative and executive politics; party
politics, party competition and opposition; institutional design; political representation). The methodological focus is primarily on quantitative methods and will be complemented by methods of computational social science in the future.

The chair offers a vibrant and internationally oriented research environment with a dynamic and cooperative team. The Bamberg Institute of Political Science and the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics, and Business Administration offer many opportunities for collaboration in research and teaching. Postdoctoral researchers can join the Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS) and profit from its courses, workshops, mentoring opportunities, and other means of support.

Description of tasks

  • Teaching 5 courses per year in the B.A. and M.A. programs in political science in the areas of comparative politics and applied quantitative methods. By the second year at the latest, teaching has to be in English and German.
  • Conducting independent research in comparative politics, preferably in the research areas of the chair
  • Collaboration in further tasks of the chair (e.g. acquiring third-party funding; joint research; some administrative tasks)
  • We support postdoctoral researchers in advancing their own academic qualifications (e.g. via the Habilitation) and their teaching skills (e.g. via didactical training).

Requirements

  • Excellent university degree in Political Science or related field (Master degree oder equivalent) Finished (or almost finished) doctoral degree in Political Science with an empirical-analytical focus,preferably in the field of comparative politics; to be employed as a civil servant, candidates have to hold a doctoral degree and fulfil the general requirements of the Bavarian civil service law(‘allgemeine beamtenrechtliche Voraussetzungen’)
  • Internationally visible publications and conference presentations
  • Profound knowledge in at least one of the research field of the chair (see above)
  • Profound knowledge in quantitative research methods; interest in and first experience with modern methods of causal inference or computational social science are assets
  • Teaching experience in the topical area of the chair (see above)
  • Experience in acquiring and conducting third-party funded research projects is an asset
  • Very good knowledge of English and German, the ability to do independent scientific research, the ability to work in a team, and social skills are expected.
