Swiss Political Science Association Annual Conference 2020: The De- and Re-nationalization of Political Conflicts in a Digital Age

The conference is organized by the Department of Political Science at the University of Lucerne and will take place in Lucerne on the 3rd and 4th of February 2020.

The main theme of the conference connects processes of digitalization with processes of inter- and renationalization. The digital transformation has traditionally been understood as a facilitator of
processes of globalization: the digital knows no borders. Recently and somewhat paradoxically, digitalization seems to facilitate the rise of particularistic identities, as well. For example, it could be
argued that digitalization, as the herald of financial and economic globalization and the transformation of industrial into informational societies, has contributed to the revitalization of nationalism. This
conference seeks to explore the tension between the border-transcending and border-reinforcing tendencies in the process of digitalization.

A highlight of the conference will be the keynote speech by Pippa Norris, one of the most prominent and distinguished political scientists of our time, on the rise of authoritarian populists in digital
societies. The keynote speech will be followed by a panel discussion with Prof. Rachel Gibson, Prof. Anita Ghodes and Prof. Helen Margetts.

As always, the panels and workshops of the conference will be organized in collaboration with the standing working groups of the Swiss Political Science Association. The working groups (described
under https://www.svpw-assp.ch/working-groups) also form the specific thematic context of your submission of the abstract on the conference topic described above. The working groups are:
