Abstract: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a controversial system updated in 2019 by the government of India to shift ‘genuine’ citizens into ‘illegal immigrants.’ Due to existing social norms and discriminatory practices, women are vulnerable and face multiple layers of challenges. They are branded as ‘foreigners’ and subjected to prolonged detention in detention camps. This presentation focuses on the intersection of various socio-political factors like gender, class, location, etc. in the  exclusionary process of determining women’s citizenship in Assam through case studies and legal analysis.

Speaker: Anjuman Ara Begum is an Associate Professor at the Royal School of Law and Administration, Royal Global University, Guwahati, Assam.

Presentation language: English
