Simon Fraser University’s Department of Political Science runs the NATO Field School and Simulation Program in collaboration with the NATO Defense College in Rome and Canada’s Delegation to NATO. The program brings graduate and undergraduate students from all NATO member-states together in the summer for seven weeks of real-world experience in international relations and diplomacy, for which students gain 6 graduate or 12 undergraduate political science credits. Our field school’s goal is to give students the opportunity, skills and experience to prepare them for a career in various national and international defence, security and foreign policy sectors. The program encompasses three weeks in Western Canada, followed by one week each in Ottawa, Belgium, Latvia and Italy (May–June 2020).

Students will:

  • Begin with three weeks of classroom learning at the SFU Burnaby campus with field studies to observe military training in Western Canada
  • Travel to decision-makers in Ottawa, including briefings at Department of National Defence, Global Affairs Canada and Canadian Joint Operations Command
  • Engage and interact with NATO and EU experts and diplomats at NATO HQ, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, European Union Military Staff HQ and European External Action Services in Belgium
  •  Observe the multinational NATO mission led by the Canadian Battlegroup, the Latvian Ministry of Defence and Task Force Latvia HQ; visit NATO’s Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence in Latvia
  • Receive specialized hands-on negotiation and diplomatic training from NATO officials and conduct a 4-day specialized simulation at the NATO Defense College in Italy

Please see the attached posters for more information about the schedule, eligibility and application process. Deadline to apply is January 31, 2020.
