As the world navigates through a labyrinth of geopolitical and geoeconomic shifts and pressing security challenges—from the war in Ukraine to the crisis in Gaza and the escalating tensions in North and South East Asia —all under the shadow of the overarching US-China rivalry, it becomes imperative to reassess the impact of these global events on EU-Korean peninsula relations. This dynamism underscores the need for strengtening strategic partnerships that uphold mutual interests, making South Korea an essential partner for the EU in Asia. On the other hand, relations with North Korea pose a unique set of security and diplomatic challenges for Europe but also worldwide with Europe in a need to reevaluate its long-standing “critical engagement” policy towards the DPRK.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of formal relations between the EU and South and the historic establishment of Italy-Korea bilateral ties in 1884, this hybrid event co-organized by the Jean Monnet Centre at Luiss University, the IPSA Research Committee 42 on Security, Unification and Integration and with the support of the European Parliament’s Former Members Association will serve as a platform to scrutinize the EU’s ties with South and North Korea, bringing together experts of the bilateral relations between these two powers in the era of geopolitics and geoeconomics.

Join us on 18 April from 4 pm to 6 pm CET!
