Indigenous Research and Knowledge Generation: Experiences from the Pacific

The webinar draws on experiences from the Pacific, including Aotearoa /New Zealand. 

The interaction between (conventional) science and indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing can range from contestation and appropriation to negotiation and augmentation.

Consideration of how this interaction can be shaped requires developing robust epistemological, ontological, methodological and ethical frameworks, while addressing power relations embedded in issues such as intellectual property, consent and governance.

The webinar series will examine these interactions and tensions across a range of contexts and regions, since local conditions and specificities are essential to understanding them.

The second webinar in this series is organised in collaboration with Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland and the Pacific Academy of Sciences. The webinar will share practical ways through which Pacific Indigenous scholars undertake research in critical areas of forest conservation, vernacular education, and the place of water in protection of land. In addition, we will learn more about Nga Pae o Te Maramatanga – the Maori Centre for Research Excellence. 

Four indigenous scholars will speak about the ways in which they approached their research.
