Apply to attend the 2026 Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research (IQMR) with fellowship support!
IQMR 2026 will be held at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University from June 14 through June 26, 2026. The Institute empowers participants -- doctoral students and early junior faculty -- to create and critique methodologically sophisticated qualitative research designs, including case studies, tests of necessity or sufficiency, and narrative or interpretive work. It explores the techniques, uses, strengths, and limitations of these methods, and emphasizes their relationships with alternative approaches. All attendees present and receive constructive feedback on their own research designs.
The schedule and reading list from IQMR 2025 are available for viewing on the IQMR website. The web page also includes a brochure and a video featuring some instructors and participants. While there will be some changes for 2026, these materials offer a sense of what IQMR participants can expect.
The Call for Applications can be found at this link; application information can also be found on the IQMR website.
There are various competitions to apply to attend IQMR 2026 with fellowship support: a general competition, as well as competitions for researchers at African scholarly institutions, at Latin American scholarly institutions, and (tentatively) at scholarly institutions in the Arab MENA region. The fellowship covers the following:
- Scholars admitted through the general competition: lodging for the duration of the institute and participation fees; participants also receive a stipend to contribute towards the cost of meals;
- Scholars admitted through the African, Latin American, and MENA competitions: economy-class airfare to and from Syracuse, lodging for the duration of the institute, and participation fees; participants also receive a stipend to contribute toward the cost of meals.
Applications are due on 1 December 2025. This is a hard deadline and will not be extended.
IQMR also accepts scholars who are nominated to attend, and whose participation is paid for, by their home unit (center/department/school). Detailed nomination instructions will be available on the IQMR website in November 2025.
