 2026 Annual Conference on Geopolitics and International Affairs
The Age of Anxiety: Dependence, Autonomy, and Strategic Ambiguity
Ryukoku University, Kyoto, Japan, September 18-20, 2026

JAGR conferences are intimate, professionally-run events, organized by Japan-based academics on a volunteer basis. They offer an opportunity to share research and engage in warm and informal conversation on issues of mutual interest. In 2026 we will gather once more in what has become our effective hometown, Kyoto city in central Japan.

In recent years the idea of a ‘new Cold War’ has gained traction, as the rising influence of the BRICS states challenges the dominance of the U.S. and its allies. Amidst growing tensions and conflicts in Ukraine and elsewhere, the implications of this new cold war remain uncertain. Consequently, many smaller and middle states, wary of abandonment, entrapment, or waning alliances, hedge their bets, keeping their loyalties flexible, and deliberately ambiguous. In this time of ‘strategic ambiguity’ understanding how security, economics, diplomacy, and technology intertwine is more important than ever. We invite your participation in examining these critical issues.

We invite submissions on the following and related themes:

  • Strategic ambiguity, shifting alliances, and multipolarity;
  • Political norms, international law, and the dynamics of diplomacy;
  • Media narratives, disinformation, and government propaganda;
  • National and regional development as a platform for peace and stability;
  • Tensions in the Indian Ocean, East Sea, and South China Sea;
  • The global implications of the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East;
  • Japan’s role in regional and global security;
  • Technological disruption and its geopolitical consequences.

Submissions

We invite abstracts presenting research findings, case studies, or workshops looking at innovative analysis of geopolitical issues. Abstracts should be submitted by 1 May 2026 and be no more than 300 words, including the author’s name, affiliation (indicating whether student, graduate student or faculty), and email address. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 15 May 2026. In-person presentations will be prioritized.

Submissions can be made via the events page of the Japan Association for Geopolitical Research (www.jagr.jp) or emailed in Word or PDF format to submissions@jagr.jp.
