IPSA and ISA Formalize their Cooperation

Publication date: Fri, 24 Sep 2021

We are pleased to announce that the International Political Science Association (IPSA) and the International Studies Association (ISA) have signed an agreement to enhance their academic cooperation.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has recently been signed by both associations and was announced at IPSA’s Pre-APSA Annual Meeting Workshop, The Importance of Developing Ties between Political Science Associations, by IPSA President Dr. Dianne Pinderhughes and ISA President Dr. Kristian Skrede Gleditsch on 27 September 2021.

Dr. Pinderhughes described the MoU as a new relationship between IPSA and ISA and thanked former IPSA President Prof. Dr. Marianne Kneuer and former ISA President Dr. Helen Milner for initiating the process and their hard work. Dr. Pinderhughes finally said she looks forward to working with Dr. Kristian Skrede Gleditsch and the successive ISA Presidents.

ISA President Dr. Kristian Skrede thanked the staff at both organizations and previous leadership for all their work in developing the MoU. Dr. Gleditsch pointed out that it’s a great value for ISA to have close links with IPSA and this would broaden the ties and collaboration between the two organizations. Dr. Gleditsch also highlighted IPSA’s extensive network of local partners that would help ISA reach new communities, researchers and individuals. He hopes that IPSA, in turn, could also benefit from participating in ISA’s activities and initiatives, including conference workshops and research grants.

The MoU has established an official bilateral agreement between the two associations, allowing them to further their existing collaboration on several fronts.

The bilateral agreement will allow IPSA and ISA to organize academic panels at each other’s main events (The IPSA World Congress of Political Science and the ISA Annual Convention).

And, for the first time, IPSA and ISA will soon offer their members a joint membership. When subscribing to one association, IPSA and ISA members will be given the opportunity to obtain the other membership as well. We look forward to launching this initiative in the coming months.
