Job Description

The WAGE project is a comparative, multi-level research project that offers a unique and in-depth examination of how collective wage formation operates and evolves across Europe. It specifically focuses on the gendered dimensions of collective bargaining by studying its historical development, current practices, and potential future directions in three key countries: Germany, Norway, and Sweden. The project centers its data collection on the metal and care sectors and employs qualitative and ethnographic research methods. 

About the two positions

The two successful applicants will form a research team in the WAGE project alongside project leader Ines Wagner at ARENA.

The first post-doctoral fellow (PD 1) will work on the cases of Norway and Sweden, and the second post-doctoral fellow (PD 2) will work on the case of Germany. Please specify in your application which of the two positions, or both, you are applying for.

The successful applicants are encouraged to pursue their own focused research interests within the frame of the project, but will be expected to conduct the following tasks:

  • Conduct interview and participant observation research in 1) Norway and Sweden (PD 1), and 2) Germany (PD 2), respectively;
  • Fieldwork, data analysis and report writing within their case(s);
  • Write, publish and disseminate research results;
  • Co-organise, together with the PI, international and national academic as well as policy and public events;
  • Participation in project workshops and advisory board;
  • Other project-related tasks, such as literature reports, etc.

The appointments are fulltime positions for the duration of three years.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their discipline. 

The proposed starting date for the positions are as soon as possible. You will be provided with office space, equipment, and services as well as necessary resources for research-related field work and conference travel. 

As a post-doctoral fellow, you will have your base at ARENA Centre for European Studies. You will be expected to be present in Oslo and to participate in ongoing activities at ARENA and WAGE.

1. A cover letter (maximum 2 pages). The letter should specify which of the two positions (or both) you’re applying for, and consist of four paragraphs in the following order:

a) a short presentation of yourself,

b) a short presentation of your merits,

c) a short presentation of your intended research and

d) a short account of why WAGE and ARENA is of interest to you. 

2. A research proposal relevant to the WAGE research focus (maximum 3 pages, excluding bibliography). The proposal must demonstrate familiarity with previous research within the area, an ability to formulate a scientific problem and research questions, to specify a relevant research design and methods and how it contributes to the WAGE project’s research agenda.

3. A CV summarizing your education, academic employments and other qualifying activities that you may have. The period of enrolment (admission – completion) in the PhD programme you have attended must be specified. Applicants with work experience outside of academia in settings relevant to the research project (i.e. working at trade unions, employer associations or relevant state actors) are also encouraged to apply.

4. A complete list of publications.

5. Copies of educational certificates (academic transcripts from university degrees only) 

6. One writing sample (e.g. published articles or working papers) of what you consider your best publication to date preferably a single authored article in an international journal.

7. Names and contact details of two persons from whom recommendation letters may be solicited. You should indicate your relation to these persons. Please do not submit any recommendation letters before we contact you and explicitly ask you to.
