Across Asia, democratic erosion takes varied forms, from constraints on civil liberties and media to weakened checks on executive power and compromised electoral competition. This panel invites research on the causes, mechanisms, and consequences of democratic backsliding and autocratization. Papers may examine institutional change, political leadership, party strategies, social coalitions, and international influences, as well as methods for identifying and comparing different pathways of democratic decline.
