Description

This tribute honors Professor Leonardo Morlino, one of the most influential political scientists of our time and former President of the International Political Science Association (IPSA). A leading scholar in comparative politics, democratization, and political regimes, Morlino left a lasting mark on the global development of political science. His work on democratization, political change, and comparative method shaped generations of scholars. He was also a generous mentor, passionate teacher, and key promoter of international academic collaboration, especially between Europe and Latin America.

Morlino’s research on political regimes is particularly relevant to the theme of this World Congress: “Resisting Autocratization in Polarized Societies”. His analyses of how democracies change —and the conditions under which they endure or erode—remain essential for understanding threats like polarization and democratic backsliding. His focus on institutional quality, rule of law, participation, and equality offers critical tools for democratic resilience.

Beyond his academic contributions, Professor Morlino was a dedicated institution-builder. He played a central role in fostering academic networks and strengthening professional associations at national, regional, and global levels. As President of IPSA and through his involvement in various scholarly organizations, he worked to create spaces for dialogue and support the development of political science, particularly in contexts where the discipline was still emerging. His leadership and vision helped shape a more inclusive, collaborative, and globally connected political science community.

This session will bring together colleagues, collaborators, and former students to honor his scholarly legacy. It will include testimonies, reflections, and a discussion on the lasting relevance of his work for contemporary political science. We invite the IPSA community to join us in honoring the life and legacy of Professor Morlino.
