WC2023 - Onsite with a Virtual Component

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted and affected how academic events are organized, and virtual participation has become a debated topic. Since the IPSA World Congress of Political Science was held virtually in 2021 for the first time in its 73 years of history, IPSA has had extensive discussions about the format of the 2023 IPSA World Congress in Buenos Aires and evaluated the viability of virtual participation.

After analyzing all the possible options in close consultation with the 2023 IPSA World Congress Local Organizing Committee, Program Co-chairs, IPSA Research Committee Liaison and the IPSA Secretariat, the Executive Committee (EC) concluded that the 2023 IPSA World Congress will be an onsite event with a limited number of virtual-only panels. This decision was not easy but was made while considering many factors, including reputational (membership and delegate experience), economic (surplus or deficit), and operational (personnel, additional resources). From the discussions, it was concluded that an onsite event would be the best format for networking and overall delegate experience. However, we also wanted to include a virtual portion to better respond to the many reasons delegates may not be able to travel onsite.

IPSA will have a limited number of virtual-only panels to further its mandate of supporting political science development in all parts of the world and creating an inclusive and global political science community. Organizing a virtual component at the 2023 World Congress in Buenos Aires aligns with these objectives, all the while giving political scientists in the region the opportunity to attend this international event in person. The 2023 Local Organizing Committee has already become one of the most inclusive ever with the participation of representatives from regional associations, including Prof. Daniel Buquet, Secretary-General of the Latin America Studies Association (ALACIP); Prof. Jesús Tovar Mendoza, President of the Mexican Political Science Association, Prof. Juan Carlos Gómez, President of the Colombian Political Science Association and Prof. Luciana Veiga, President of the Brazilian Political Science Association.

New Reduced Registration Rates Available

For the first time in IPSA’s history, the World Congress registration fee will be based on the country of citizenship of delegates. By recognizing the financial disparity between countries, citizens of Upper-Middle Income Economies and Low and Lower-Middle Income Economies now have access to reduced fees to attend the 2023 World Congress.

*All countries are categorized based on their Country Gross National Income. The country selected must be the member’s country of citizenship. Click here to see the detailed list of countries.

**Registration category for students requires proof of student status at the time of registration (a proof of student status in PDF format will have to be uploaded to complete a student registration).

IPSA’s Global South Solidarity Fund helps political scientists from developing countries to attend the IPSA World Congress. Last year, 800 World Congress participants made a record contribution (US$36,640), enabling us to assist an even greater number of colleagues in financial need to attend the Congress.

The World Congress will deliver a rich program on the theme “Politics in the Age of Transboundary Crises” which is coordinated by Program Co-Chairs Euiyoung Kim (Seoul National University) and Theresa Reidy (University College Cork).

Panel and paper proposals on any subject in political science are welcome, starting 20 September 2022.
