Job Description

We invite applications for one or more positions as Tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

The positions are available from 1 November 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Applications are sought from eminent candidates who can enhance the Department's research education and societal impact within the field of International Relations (including, but not limited to security studies, gender, diplomacy, war, post-colonialism, international political sociology and political economy).

Within IR, the Department also seeks to strengthen its research in global environmental politics (including, but not limited to research on climate change, sustainability, biodiversity, and/or pollution).  We welcome applications within both IR and global environmental politics.

Research and teaching in the Department, including in the IR research group, which will be the organizational home of the assistant professor(s), is methodologically and theoretically  diverse. We expect successful candidates to be able and willing to engage in intellectual exchanges across a range of IR theories and topics and methods within the discipline.

Job Description

  • General duties attached to the position are:
  •  Research within the field of international relations IR
  • Research specializing on global environmental politics (for at least  one of the positions)
  • Teaching, supervision and examination of undergraduate and graduate    students
  • Administrative tasks
  • Knowledge exchange with wider society (societal impact)
  • Contribution to the social and intellectual life of the Department
  • Contribution to project acquisition, or plans thereof

We also expect an assistant professor to develop competences and experience within research, teaching and dissemination. In time, the successful candidate should develop competences to attract funding within his/her specialist area.

Qualifications
We expect candidates to present a clear, well-developed and viable strategy for future outstanding research that will result in further world-leading publications, external research funding as well as a commitment to innovate teaching.

Essential Qualifications
To be qualified for the position the applicant must have a PhD in Political Science or equivalent academic qualifications as well as:

  • An aspiration to increase our understanding of the world and its problems based on a proven record of outstanding research, as evidenced primarily by a well-received PhD dissertation and an emerging international reputation based on a publication profile that complements the existing    research strengths of the Department
  • A commitment to contribute to the delivery of an excellent student experience based on a track-record of excellence in teaching in one or more of the main areas covered by the Department. The Department prefers candidates, who can cover more than one of the main courses taught at BSc level
  • An engagement in knowledge exchange and policy-impact in Denmark as well as in an international context. We encourage proactive engagement with government, business and community partners to enhance the impact of research and education and improve the employability of our students.
  • Robust interpersonal skills, which enables the candidate to be a constructive and empathic colleague in a diverse and vibrant working environment.

Conditions of employment

 

Assistant professorship is a further-education post, where supervision as well as pedagogical training is provided. The position(s) will be part of the tenure-track programme at the University of Copenhagen. The programme offers the tenure-track candidate a contract of six years that may result in a tenured associate professorship. For additional information about assistant

Terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The annual salary as Assistant Professor is based on seniority and is within the range of DKK 412,378 ? 434,179. In addition to the salary paid directly, the University will also pay a monthly contribution to the pension fund corresponding to 17.1 % of the salary. Negotiations for additional supplements will be possible.

  • employment and academic background including a record of research and international research cooperation.
  • A maximum of 6 publications.
  • A complete and numbered list of publications. The publications enclosed in the application that the applicant would like the assessment committee to consider should be marked with an asterisk (*).
  • Documentation of teaching experience and evaluation, supervisory activities and pedagogical training (if any).
  • Documentation of the ability to disseminate information to and share    knowledge with society (if any).

If publications marked by an asterisk (*) are the result of a joint effort, the extent and the nature of the applicant?s contribution to each individual work must be clarified in the application, and if possible, a declaration from the co-authors or the head of the institution or office at which the work was completed should be enclosed as well.

Application procedure
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, applicants are selected for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee. All applicants are notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert Assessment Committee or not. The selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to

The selection process will include a presentation and a panel interview with the Appointment Committee. Interviews are scheduled for September.
