The School is one of the largest units of political science in the whole of Canada, with over 50 professors and numerous research programs. The School situates itself at crossroads of European and North-American research traditions, and within a global network and reach through its students, professors and research specialties. The University of Ottawa is one of the very few universities worldwide to be entirely bilingual French-English.

The two major programs, Political Science and Public Administration offer complete training and curricula for every candidate profile.

The Political Science doctoral program is therefore divided into four specialties, giving freedom of choice for everyone within an interdisciplinary mindset: international relations, comparative politics, political thought, and Canadian and Québécois politics.

International Relations offers for all interested an in-depth study of international relations theories, international political economy, global governance, international security, as well as an in-depth study of critical approaches to global politics, territoriality and to environmental challenges.

Comparative Politics delves into essential question of political and economic changes, of development, of social movements through an international and regional outlook. From Africa to Latin America, through Europe, the Middle East and Asia, Comparative Politics critically questions notions of statehood, politics of identities and public policies, always through a comparative lens.

The specialty in Political Thought offers an inward look into itself through a historical and contemporary analysis of ideas, with a detailed analysis of critical theory, French and Anglo-American political thoughts, as well as of Hegelian studies.

Canadian and Québécois politics emphasizes a large range of research possibilities on key, fundamental, challenges: citizenship, identities, women and politics, the Constitution and institutions, political economy, political parties and interest groups and social movements, urban and public policies, as well as questions relating to immigration, Francophonie, and the environment.

The doctoral program in Public Administration offers the opportunity for a research project around relevant questions of public policies or public administration, relations between public and private and community sectors, and offers the opportunity to gain thorough knowledge on the functioning of public bodies, of public finances management, and of governance.
