The Department of Law is looking for a postdoc to join a multidisciplinary research team. This is a two-year full-time position starting August 1, 2019 or upon agreement. The position consists of 20% teaching and 80% conducting research.
Project description and working tasks
The postdoctoral project is part of the six-year project “Judicial independence under pressure? Building an infrastructure for multidisciplinary research of the Court of Justice of the European Union”. The project is carried out by a research group consisting of researchers in law and political science at five research institutions (across four countries). The main purpose of the project is to create a multidisciplinary platform for a long-needed improvement of the research on law and politics in Europe. At the core of the project will be a comprehensive database with detailed information on all cases and judges of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), which will contribute to the goal of better understanding the conditions for judicial independence under political constraints. Together with the rest of the project team, the successful candidate will participate in designing and developing the database, organizing and participating in activities, and conducting research using the database. The postdoc will be co-supervised by Mattias Derlén (Umeå University), Johan Lindholm (Umeå University), and Daniel Naurin (Gothenburg University and University of Oslo).
Requirements and Qualifications
Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree, in law, political science, international relations, or another discipline relevant to the project. Absent exceptional circumstances (sick leave, parental leave etc.), preference is given to applicants that have received the doctoral degree in the last three years. Postdoctoral researchers who will teach or supervise should have relevant education.
The main assessment criteria for the appointment are documented research skills and academic track record and we are looking for a highly motivated and responsible candidate who wants to develop as an individual scientist as well as a research team member. When selecting among applicants, the selection committee will particularly favor applicants having education in or experience with any of the following: law and politics, including judicial politics; studies of the CJEU or other courts; studies of European law and/or politics; empirical legal studies; law and economics; statistics; programming; network analysis; and text mining. An ability to perform research independently as well as in a team and excellent skills in the English language, both oral and written, are essential.
