On the 25th anniversary of its founding, the Instituto de Ciências Sociais of the University of Lisbon announces the 3rd edition of A. Sedas Nunes award with the aim of rewarding scientific work of exceptional value which contributes in a decisive way to the knowledge of modern and contemporary Portuguese society. The amount of the award will be €20.000 and will reward a scientific work (in Portuguese, Castilian, French or English) published between 1 January and 31 December 2006.
The applications may be submitted by individual or collective authors, Portuguese or non Portuguese. Candidates may submit only one work.
The panel of judges will be composed of the following members. The Chairman of the ICS Scientific Board; Carlos Fortuna (Departamento de Sociologia da Faculdade de Economia da Universidade de Coimbra); Francisco Bethencourt (Departamento de Estudos Portugueses e Brasileiros, King’s College, Londres); José Ramón Montero (Departamento de Ciências Políticas, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid); Maria Benedicta Monteiro (Departamento de Psicologia Social do Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa); Robert Fishman (Departamento de Sociologia, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, EUA); Robert Rowland (Departamento de Antropologia, Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa)
The decisions of the jury will be taken by majority vote and the Chairman will have a deciding vote in the event of a tie.
The panel of judges may decide not to make the award and there will be no possibility of appeal.
The judges will make a decision within the six months following the application deadline and will issue a report, signed by all the members of the panel, outlining the reasons for their decision.
Applications must include seven copies of the published scientific work, full identification of the candidate (s), as well as his/her curriculum vitae, and must be presented at the Instituto de Ciências Sociais by 31 May 2007
