BackgroundRecognised as study group in 1982; granted research committee status in 1988.
ObjectivesTo promote study of public administration and public management, to advance the analysis of public policy, the consequences of public policies for institutions of government, and the art of public management. Our purposes reflect those of Thomas Dye : finding out what governments do, why they do it, and what difference does it make.
The work of the group has the following foci : public policy analysis as a field of political science; the role of policy analysis in government decision-making; the context and scope of policy research; and policy research and governmental policy: the relationship between the policy analyst and policy maker, the institutional consequences of policy choices; trends in public management reform; and evaluation of national government-level public management reforms, and the study of public administration/public management and policy analysis as academic fields. Investigations comprise the major approaches to the study of public policy: quantitative, theoretical-historical, and applied.
