Background Recognised as study group in 1986; granted research committee status in 1993.
ObjectivesInvestigates issues and problems relating to the organisation and function of public bureaucracies in developing societies. It focuses on the comparative study of the role of bureaucracies in the formulation and implementation of public policies, and their interactions with other political institutions and functionaries.
Among specific policy areas investigated are the problems faced by developing societies in their quest for modernisation and development. Also studies bureaucracies’ interaction with other socio-economic forces, the citizen and the civil society, and its involvement in broader environmental concerns for human development and quality of life.
