Transformations to Sustainability is an exciting new global research funding program launched by the International Social Science Council (ISSC).
Transformations to Sustainability will promote research on the fundamental and innovative processes of social transformation needed to secure effective, equitable and sustainable solutions to some of the most urgent problems of global change and sustainability, including climate change, biodiversity loss, water and food security, energy consumption, and poverty and growing inequalities.
The program will encourage researchers from the social, behavioural and economic sciences to take the lead in developing international “transformative knowledge networks” that:
- focus on the needs and opportunities for social transformation in concrete contexts of application;
- bring together researchers from different disciplines and fields of science, as well as different regions of the world;
- engage stakeholders in the co-design and co-production of solutions-oriented knowledge and the development of knowledge-sharing and mutual learning networks; and
- build capacity for international research collaboration and support early career social scientists.
Transformations to Sustainability will issue two calls for proposals in 2014. The first, issued on March 31, 2014, will apply to proposals for seed funding, with a possible 30 grants of €30,000to help researchers prepare for the full call. The second call in October 2014 will be for full proposals for transformative knowledge networks, with a possible three grants of €300,000/year over three years awarded.
For complete details, please see the Transformations to Sustainability program description and call for proposals.
Preparatory call for seed funding
The first call will be implemented by the ISSC and is intended to enable social science researchers and their knowledge partners to respond meaningfully to the call in October for Transformative Knowledge Network proposals. Up to 30 successful proposals for seed funding will be supported (receiving up to €30,000 each over 6.5 months). The deadline is 31 May 2014.
The seed funding will allow successful applicants to build partnerships with colleagues in other disciplines, fields and countries, to identify and establish contact with relevant communities of practice and stakeholders, and to engage with them as knowledge partners to co-design full proposals to develop Transformative Knowledge Networks.
The call for seed funding is open to social science researchers from academic and other organisations with a strong focus on research, from any part of the world. The second call, in October 2014, will be an open call, i.e. not restricted to the recipients of seed funding.

The Transformations to Sustainability programme is intended as a major contribution to the work of Future Earth, a global research platform that provides knowledge and support to accelerate transformations to a sustainable world. Future Earth is co-sponsored by the members of the International Science and Technology Alliance for Global Sustainability.
