Job Description

Financed by the German Tenure-Track Programme for Young Researchers, the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena is recruiting a Professor of Political Science (W1) with a specialization on “International Organizations” (Tenure Track).

The position is tenable from the summer semester 2019.

In order to sharpen its profile, the Institute of Political Science has developed a new thematic focus called Global and European Governance, which comprises the professorships of International Relations, European Politics, and International Organizations. The new Professor of International Organizations shall be familiar with the entire spectrum of international organization studies in both research and teaching. This may include a focus on governmental and also non-governmental organizations. In addition, the professorship should cover a specific policy area that defines the work of international organizations today, such as international security, migration policy, human rights policy, environmental politics, and economic or financial policy. As far as intra-organizational affairs are concerned, attention should be paid to the member states as well as international bureaucracies. Expertise in the field of inter-organizational relations is advantageous. However, the European Union should not be the focus of analysis.

The Professor will teach within the Institute’s political science Bachelors and Masters programmes, the teachers’ education programme in social studies, the newly emerging Masters programme on International Organizations and Crisis Management, as well as several other inter-disciplinary and international Masters programmes.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate substantial theoretical and empirical expertise of international organizations and profound knowledge of at least one of the major policy fields that international organizations are engaged in. The candidate will have an outstanding doctorate in Political Science and will ideally have developed international research collaborations. Applicants should indicate a potential for producing internationally recognized publications, for acquiring high-standard third-party funding, and for providing high-quality teaching as well as supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. The capacity to teach in English is required.

Applicants for this position must hold a university degree, be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and have a proven research track record that is normally demonstrated by an outstanding doctoral thesis. If the applicant has been employed as a research assistant before or after his or her PhD, the length of the doctoral studies and employment period should not exceed six years in total. The initial appointment will be for four years. After a positive evaluation it will be extended for two more years. Upon successful completion of the final review after six years of employment, the position will be promoted to a professorship paid on salary scale W2.

Applications from abroad are welcomed. The successful candidate is expected to learn German.

Friedrich Schiller University is committed to increasing the number of women in research and teaching. Therefore, the University actively encourages qualified female scientists to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference over other candidates with equal qualifications.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a summary of past research achievements, copies of certificates, list of publications, documentation and evaluation of teaching activities and lectures, as well as information on external funding received. The closing date for applications is 29 March 2018.
