The position is limited to 31. March 2023 ideally starting April 1, 2018, subject to the release of the necessary resources within an ERC Starting Grant.
The position will be located within the project “The Legacy of Colonialism: Origins and Outcomes of Social Protection” (short: COLSOC) led by Prof. Dr. Carina Schmitt and funded through an ERC Starting Grant for a duration of five years. The project seeks to systematically analyze how colonialism shaped the remarkable differences in early social protection and its contemporary outcomes in terms of inclusiveness and generosity across the post-colonial world. The ‘Comparative Social Protection Dataset (CSPD)’ constitutes a core pillar of the project. It will provide novel information on the development and outcomes of social protection, as well as central characteristics of colonized territories and respective imperial strategies for 70 former British and French colonies from the beginning of the 20th century until the present day. Additionally, four case studies of former British and French colonies will be conducted facilitating the identification and tracing of the causal mechanisms between the colonial legacy and social policies.
The post-doctoral researcher will be largely responsible for the construction and development of the ‘Comparative Social Protection Dataset (CSPD)’, and will conduct quantitative analyses jointly with the principal investigator. The post-doc will further be expected to conduct project-related research independently but also in co-operation with the principal investigator. The project will be supported by doctoral researchers as well as student assistants. A travel budget is also available.
- Completed Ph.D. degree in political science, or a related discipline
- In-depth knowledge in comparative social policy
- Knowledge of and experience with quantitative research and quantitative analyses (ideally demonstrated in the Ph.D. thesis or publications)
- Expertise in quantitative methods
- Expertise in compiling large-scale databases
- Programming skills in STATA, Python or R
- Excellent writing and communication skills in English
- Interest in interdisciplinary work and in historically oriented political science
- Good organizational skills as well as the willingness and capacity for teamwork
