Job Description

Åbo Akademi University is looking for a doctoral student majoring in Political Science or Public Administration. We are recruiting a doctoral student to a salaried full-time position for a maximum of four years. The position is hosted by the Social Science Research Institute, which operates on the campuses of Turku and Vaasa in close collaboration with the subject cluster of Political Science and related subjects. The position involves doctoral studies in one of the following subjects: Political Science (Turku), Public Administration (Turku) or Political Science and Mass Communication (Vaasa). Thematically, the doctoral studies fall within the areas of political opinion and political behavior. In more concrete terms, we are interested in participatory democracy and its impact.

Qualification requirements and terms of employment

The position is open for applications by individuals holding a master’s degree AND with an assigned or possible supervisor at Åbo Akademi University within the Social Science Research Institute or within the subject of Political Science or Public Administration.

Applicants who have not yet been granted a right to conduct postgraduate/doctoral studies within the Faculty must meet the criteria for admission to postgraduate/doctoral education in accordance with the Faculty’s doctoral program policy.

Applicants to the doctoral student position are required to submit a research plan (max. 10,000 characters) in English or Swedish. The research plan shall include the following:

  • Abstract (max. ½ A4)
  • Implementation (timetable, preliminary plan for funding) and research environment as well as a list of sources, including the titles, research overview, research questions and methodology, and the time plan for the thesis work
  • Background (theoretical and empirical framework)
  • Purpose and questions of the research
  • Research methods and materials as well as possible risks and ethical considerations.

The doctoral student has a total working time of 1,624 hours per year. The agreements concerning doctoral studies and supervision are reviewed annually. The salary of the doctoral student is based on the Job Demand Levels 1-4 for teaching and research personnel. In addition to the task-related component, a salary component based on individual work performance is added to the salary in accordance with the General collective agreement for universities. A trial period will be applicable to a new employee. The doctoral student’s primary task is to work on his/her own thesis. Doctoral students are expected to contribute to the activities of the institute or subject in accordance with the limits specified in the General collective agreement for universities. The employed doctoral student shall be an active part of the existing research community in Turku and/or Vaasa.
